| The
Science of Photography
Before 1890, the scientific investigation of the mechanism
of the photographic process had been carried out by a handful
of scientists in a rather haphazard manner. Hurter and Driffield,
however, in their publications of 1890 began a systematic
investigation into
photographic science, which has been taken up by others and
continued to the present day. Companies were set up to manufacture
photographic materials in the late 19th century in most industrialized
countries, but it was George Eastman who initiated a remarkable
change by establishing an industrial research laboratory supporting
methods of mass production backed up by international marketing.
In recent years, photographic and imaging science has expanded
to include a wide variety of research topics related to digital
imaging.
